Marketing power 2
American Express has also put RGM to work. Its Members Project, launched in 2007, invited card holders to submit worthy humanitarian projects - and to vote on which would receive funding through Amex's substantial donations ($2.5 million in its second year). In 2008, the site attracted 1.8 million visitors - imagine doing that with a conversation about credit cards!
More recently, Liberty Mutual has launched the Responsibility Project, which invites user comments on the theme of personal responsibility, and works to link it back to the Liberty's business of insurance. Liberty saw a 17% gain in auto insurance premium revenues after the project launched.
Done right, reflected glory marketing allows virtually any brand - even the wallflowers - to tap the power of social media. You can use RGM to foster the kind of online conversations that build relationships with your customers. You can use it to solidify or strengthen your brand. And you can use it to deliver the sales results that Dove, Amex and Liberty Mutual have all achieved.
But the real power of reflected glory transcends its marketing impact. When your company digs deep to find the resonant themes that connect you with your customers, you are reconnecting to your most profound strengths, and to the essence of your brand. By surfacing those strengths in the social context of the Internet, you're able to reinterpret, re-envision and even re-engineer your core value proposition. In partnership with your customers, and using emergent social media platforms, you may find new ways of translating what makes you great into great products, services or value.
And you may find that the glory of a successful, resonant campaign isn't the only thing reflected back at you. Hold the social web up as a mirror - look at yourself through the eyes of your customers - and you'll uncover new possibilities for growth and innovation that your reflected glory efforts can help deliver.
Marketing power 1
I love Glad Press'n Seal - a kind of futuristic plastic wrap that actually keeps your food sealed in its bowl, even when you accidentally knock it off the fridge shelf. It's like someone finally invented Saran Wrap - Saran Wrap that works.
But as much as I appreciate keeping my food tightly sealed, plastic wrap is not something that fills my heart with poetry or the passionate desire to create a video tribute. Plastic wrap is something I want to use, not something I want to talk about.
And yet, like just about every consumer brand these days, Glad Press'n Seal has asked me to do exactly that. There's a Press 'n Seal site that invites me to set up yet another online community membership so that I can contribute content about, you guessed it, plastic wrap.
Glad is all-too-tightly sealed in an increasingly common dilemma: how do you tap the power of social media when your brand or product is less than exciting to consumers, or even (in the case of the B2B market) invisible to them?
Unless your customers care so passionately about your brand or product that they pay for the privilege of wearing your logo, they probably don't care enough to be part of an online conversation about your brand. If you're anybody other than Apple, Nike or Coke, you're probably going to need some other basis for convening a conversation that connects you to your customers.
That's where reflected glory marketing (RGM) comes in. Find something your customers do care passionately about - something that reflects thematically and positively on your brand - and invite customers into that conversation.
Your first exposure to RGM was probably through Dove's Campaign for Real Beauty. Rather than asking us to talk about soap (yippee!! soap!), Dove found common ground with its customers on an issue that just about every woman can relate to: body image. As part of a multi-channel campaign, Dove invited women to share their thoughts and experiences on the campaign web site - and more than a million women logged in during 2005 alone. Dove reported a 600% increase in sales within two months' of the campaign's launch.

Rule of 72
Rule of 72
A formula used to determine the amount of time it will take for invested money to double at a given compound interest rate, which is 72 divided by the interest rate. The logic is as follows. The time for an amount A to double is given by 2A=A(1+i)^t where ^ represents exponent and i is the interest rate, e.g. .05 is 5%. The A term cancels from both sides of the question. Solve for t by taking the natural log of both sides of the equation. Hence, t= [ln(2) over {ln(1+i)}], which is approximately equal to 0.72 over i. Hence the rule of 72.

deadline 2
3. Avoid the curse of the "final push." Scope and sequence a project so that each part is shorter than the one that precedes it. Feeling the work units shrink as you go gives you a tangible sense of progress and speeds you toward the end. When you leave the long parts for last, you're more likely to get worn out before you finish. Besides, if you're "dead at the deadline," those other projects you're juggling will stagnate.
4. (ok, 3 isn't always perfect) Find the poetry in the humdrum. Almost any project has a stretch that numbs the brain. The moment you realize you've slipped into the Drone Zone, look in the mirror -- literally. It's hilarious, even if a little scary, to see the vacancy of the running hamster in your eyes. Laugh at it, write about it, tell a friend what you saw. It might even inspire verse. Whether or not you're a poet, record how long it took you to morph from human to hamster. Then sequence your next project accordingly.
Deadline
Deadline
Umair Haque For people who work for themselves, the self-imposed deadline is a fact of life. Whether you're starting a business, writing a dissertation, or consulting for a dozen clients, paying attention only to your drop-dead dates would mean never meeting them. You obviously have to set up interim goals along the way.
But the art of self-scheduling is not unique to entrepreneurs and PhD students. It's one that I actively -- and successfully -- practiced for the two decades I spent working for other people. And it's now making my transition to freelance life a lot smoother. Here are the self-scheduling techniques that worked for me really well in the office -- and that remain the hallmarks of my working style out on the professional fringes:
1. Start your day as early as possible. Even if you're not a morning person, there's something intoxicating about planning to do A and B, and then discovering you've done A, B, and C by noon. Seeing C in the rearview mirror at lunch also makes D and E look a lot more inviting -- and Q not so far out of reach.
2. When it comes to small tasks, tackle similar ones back to back. That's what gets you on a roll. The mind thrives on repetition, at least to a point. Capitalize on what makes us crave the refrains of songs and makes "Goldilocks and the Three Bears" such a potent tale. Three, I must tell you, is a beautiful number. Three things done by noon is ecstasy.

business review : people mangament
Virtually all of the young executives I work with want to be good managers and mentors. They just don't have the time — or so they believe. "I could either make a sale, or I could take one of my guys out for lunch to talk about his career," a financial services leader told me recently. "In this economy, which one do you think I'm going to pick?"
Good question. But the answer is simple, and it doesn't change based on these terrible economic times. It's neither.
You don't have to choose between commercial results and good leadership. Don't get trapped into thinking that leadership is an extra 50% commitment on top of your day job. You can be a terrific manager and developer of people without sacrificing a single sale. Why? Because the amount of time you spend coaching your people, mentoring them, giving them feedback, and otherwise bolstering their skills is not what leads to your — or their — success. It's how you lead, not how much, that counts.
Want to have maximum impact in minimum time? Use what I call the 3.1% Coach method. Limit your people-development activities to no more than 15 incremental minutes per day (that's 75 minutes a week, or 3.1% of a hypothetical 40-hour workweek). Then employ the "smart coach approach" to leverage that tiny slice of time for results.
Here are four ways to do it:
Turn dead time into development time. Walking back to your office after a meeting? Use those two minutes to give your direct report feedback on the presentation, and on how he could do better next time. He didn't have a speaking role? Ask him how he thought the meeting went and how he might have made certain points differently — and then offer feedback on that. Direct, in-the-moment feedback is your single best tool for developing people.
Constantly spot dead time. Look for every two-minute stretch in your day during which you could be talking to someone else — most often, that's travel time — and convert each into a coaching opportunity. Walking down to Starbucks to get a coffee? Driving to the airport? Headed out to your car at the end of the day? Ask one of your people to come along with — and talk to them about their goals and priorities.
Show up in their workspace. Employees expect you to stay in your seat. Don't. Once per day, get up and walk over to the desk of someone you haven't spoken to recently. Take two minutes to ask her what she's working on. Once she's done answering, respond "What do you need from me to make that project/transaction successful?" Message to employee: I know who you are, I've got high expectations — and I've got your back.
Make two calls per day. On your way home from work, call (or email) two people you met with that day, and offer "feedforward." "I like what you've done with the Smithers account. Next time, let's try to keep marketing costs down. Thanks for your hard work." Always make "thank you" a part of the message. Employees who feel appreciated, and know that you're trying to develop their skills, stay engaged over the long run.
With consistent (read: daily) use, these strategies will pay off. Your employees will feel like you're not just their boss, but a coach — they'll sharpen their skills, and stay motivated.
And in any economy, that's 15 minutes well spent.

It is strategically located in the Central Business District and atop the "Clark Quay" Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) train station. Central consists of retail, office towers and home-offices. Being next to the Singapore River, Central is a natural tourist destination and the pulse of our vibrant business and civic district.
Surging demand for prime office space and the lack of strata-titled office spaces for sale in Singapore makes Central a rare and ideal investment opportunity.
We are embarking on the launch phase for our Office Tower block. We are offering compact and functional office spaces with a 4.5 floor-to-floor height, encompassing a built-in pantry and washroom. These range from 883 to 1688 sq ft in size.

Persuasive
Persuasive
Communication, Managing yourself, Personal effectiveness
People who read this also read:Moving projects forward in today's flatter organizations, where cross-functionality is the norm, requires the ability to manage up, down, and sideways. Power and line authority go only so far.
That's where persuasion comes in, says Robert Cialdini, Regents' Professor of Psychology and Marketing at Arizona State University and coauthor with Noah J. Goldstein and Steve J. Martin of Yes! 50 Scientifically Proven Ways to Be Persuasive (Free Press, 2008).
Much as martial arts combatants overcome their opponents using leverage, inertia, and gravity rather than brute strength, you can persuade others by exploiting the principles of social influence. These include the feelings of obligation generated between two people when one does a favor for the other, the tendency to say yes to people we like, and the desire to act in ways that are consistent with our commitments and values.
Activate reciprocity
One good turn generates another. Any favors you do today are likely to be reciprocated down the road:
Championing a colleague's idea in a meeting when others are giving it only tepid support. Sharing useful information with a coworker in another part of the company who otherwise wouldn't have received it. Pitching in to help a teammate finish a presentation or prepare for it. Don't be insincere and don't be cold-blooded; people will see through you and be on their guard. Just look for opportunities to be a good person. You won't just feel good; you'll create a network of indebted colleagues who will actively look for ways to help you out.
Reciprocity can also repair relationships that have gone sour, though not quite in the way you might expect. If you are trying to mend fences with a colleague, ask her for a favor. This sounds counterintuitive, but it works. You're giving her an opportunity to see herself as magnanimous. So ask her to help you out.
Cialdini recommends that the favor be in keeping with the person's job and will make him look good. From his own experience he cites a time when, after winning a heated debate about hiring, he immediately reached out to a colleague who had been in the opposite camp. Walking the colleague back to his office, Cialdini asked him for advice on a paper he was writing. "He gave me a few books and suggested resources," he recalls.
In the course of that discussion, Cialdini also learned what the colleague was working on. By the time he was ready to return the books, he had found some resources to recommend in return, thus cementing a positive relationship. "We didn't have a pleasant exchange in that faculty meeting. As soon as my side won, I could tell there was likely to be bitterness. But because I asked for his help, we've never been less than friends," he says.
Focus on the other person's positive attributes
Like reciprocation, focusing on a person's positive attributes is an ideal way to begin a relationship. This technique requires that you consciously look for something you genuinely like about a person. Even if he is a terror at work, there might be something you can admire about his personal interests, his past experiences, or the causes he supports.
Once you have identified the positive trait, compliment him on it. By showing your approval, you help him to like you. And that, says Cialdini, is when the barriers come down. "People feel safer and are more open and trusting with people who like them. They are more likely to give them the extra information that will help them succeed."
Focusing on the positive can help improve relations with a colleague you have historically disliked. For example, a manager at a pharmaceutical company had a tense relationship with her boss and the two were often at loggerheads. Using this technique, she realized that his tendency to hold work up was due to his desire to get it right.
When she complimented him on those values, his face lit up. The next morning he gave her the kind of information he'd never shared before: a detailed heads-up on what she should emphasize and be on guard for in gaining buy-in at an important meeting that afternoon.
"Without that information, things would have gone wrong. In the process of saying 'I admire your high quality standards,' she also gave him a reputation to uphold," notes Cialdini. He realized that if she appeared in a positive light, he as her boss would, too.
Invoke the person's previous opinions and behaviors
When you remind someone of his previous position on an issue — "Remember, Mark, how you argued that the company should devote greater resources to educating the sales team about the new product line?" — he is more likely to behave in a way that is consistent with that position. This is an example of the phenomenon known as labeling.
To use labeling to influence someone, you're giving him a reputation to uphold. If you want his support on a proposal to shift more marketing dollars from print to online ad buys to drive widget sales, invoke his track record of preferring online advertising for items similar to the widget. You want him to perceive that supporting your proposal is in line with his previous positions.
Labeling, as you can imagine, is especially effective with someone who thinks highly of his own decision-making prowess.
This technique requires familiarity with a person's priorities, values, and stated positions. If you have not worked extensively enough with someone to gain this insight, review presentations he has given and discreetly probe for information about him in conversations with those who work with him more closely.
Influence is ultimately about relationships. The more you have and the stronger they are, the better able you'll be to bring others to your side when you want their support.
big different from small change
It seems like such a simple change. Yet asking people to introduce themselves and describe their function in the operating theater before an operation starts turns out to have a significant impact on the operation's outcome. That is just one of the findings in a recent study by Atul Gawande (the study includes more than a dozen other authors as well), just published in the New England Journal of Medicine, that has created quite a buzz in the healthcare community.
That requirement, along with 18 others, forms part of a checklist adopted by surgical teams at eight hospitals. Over the course of the year the teams saw their death rates fall by 40% and their rate of complications by almost a third. The researchers weren't able to attribute the success to any one of the items on the checklist and concluded that it was the behavioral changes occasioned by the checklist (and the fact that they were part of an experiment) that improved the outcomes of the operations conducted by the team.
The study's findings echo an article published in the September 2005 issue of Harvard Business Review. In his McKinsey Award-winning paper "Fixing Healthcare from the Inside, Today," operations expert Steven J. Spear presents the results of a series of experiments conducted at a hospitals in Boston, Pittsburgh, Salt Lake City, Seattle, and elsewhere. Like the Gawande study, these projects show just how a great an impact a combination of relatively small changes in procedure can have on the quality and safety of healthcare provision.
One Pennsylvania hospital, for example, was able to reduce infections caused by inserting catheters into a patient's bloodstream from 37 occurrences to just six. Deaths from infections fell from 19 to one. The hospital also saved $1.4 million a year in the direct costs related to treating the infections. Achieving all this required virtually no investment, just six simple changes in procedure, such as requiring staff to completely remove faulty catheters and insert new ones rather than attempt to fix the faulty catheter.
But Spear does more than just present a set of recommended procedural changes. The real contribution of this paper is that it demonstrates how healthcare service providers can discover the sort of improvements that he describes for themselves - an impressive demonstration of the old saw about how teaching a man to fish is better than just giving him the fish.

Scared of being laid off? Do you know anyone who isn't?
No one, aside from bankruptcy lawyers, can feel secure in their jobs in the midst of the current economic mess. But constantly checking your company's stock price isn't going to change anything. Nor is lingering by the water cooler and snooping for details of the impending layoffs and the severance packages that come with them. It's natural to feel anxious, but those behaviors aren't going to protect you from what might be coming down the pike. The real question now isn't "Are you at risk?" It's "So what are you going to do about it?"
The recent Harvard Business Review article "How to Protect Your Job in a Recession" offered several pieces of advice for managers facing possible job loss: maintain a cheerful attitude; be flexible; be a good corporate citizen.
Here's one more. Remember that old saying that "every job is sales?" That's exactly what you need to do right now: Sell -- yourself.
In my work coaching rising superstars, I've noticed that these consistently high performers tend to fall into one of two categories:
people who let their good work speak for itself people who communicate their value to their bosses, peers, and direct reports - and to everyone else, too. When it comes to getting paid and promoted, the second group usually does better. And in bear markets, they tend to survive.
Don't get me wrong. I'm not advocating that you brag - or that there's any substitute for strong performance. What I am offering are specific, actionable ways to self-promote, gracefully and with integrity - ways to put yourself forward as someone the organization needs to keep. In this mess, you can't afford not to. Here's what you should do:
Send an e-mail to your boss praising a young employee's work on a recent project. You'll look like a team player - and a thoughtful manager - while drawing attention to your group's success. It's a nice thing to do for your direct report, too.
Ask your boss for feedback on your priorities (rather than your performance). Make a list of your key projects and goals for the next six months, and walk through the list together. Message to boss: I'm both thoughtful and action-oriented.
Find a teaching moment. Gossiping with your peers about the subprime mess doesn't demonstrate leadership. Taking the initiative to get all the recent college hires in your department into a conference room and explain what "subprime" means does.
Get in early. Don't work longer hours, just earlier ones. Senior people tend to be early birds - and they'll notice if you're there. Remember, you don't know who's making decisions about the names on that dreaded list.

Air Combat Fighter competition
Three factors would converge to turn the LWF into a serious acquisition program. First, four North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) allies of the U.S. – Belgium, Denmark, the Netherlands, and Norway – were looking to replace their F-104G fighter-bomber variants of the F-104 Starfighter interceptor; furthermore, they were seeking an aircraft that their own aerospace industries could manufacture under license, as they had the F-104G. In early 1974, they reached an agreement with the U.S. that if the USAF placed orders for the aircraft winning the LWF flyoff, they would consider ordering it as well. Secondly, while the USAF was not particularly interested in a complementary air superiority fighter, it did need to begin replacing its F-105 Thunderchief fighter-bombers. Third, the U.S. Congress was seeking to achieve greater commonality in fighter procurements by the Air Force and Navy. The Congress, in August 1974, redirected funds for the Navy’s VFAX program to a new Navy Air Combat Fighter (NACF) program that would essentially be a navalized fighter-bomber variant of the LWF. These requirements meshed relatively well, but the timing of the procurement was driven by the timeframe needs of the four allies, who had formed a “Multinational Fighter Program Group” (MFPG) and were pressing for a U.S. decision by December 1974. The U.S. Air Force had planned to announce the LWF winner in May 1975, but this decision was advanced to the beginning of the year, and testing was accelerated. To reflect this new, more serious intent to procure a new aircraft, along with its reorientation toward a fighter-bomber design, the LWF program was rolled into a new Air Combat Fighter (ACF) competition in an announcement by U.S. Secretary of Defense James R. Schlesinger in April 1974. Schlesinger also made it clear that any ACF order would be for aircraft in addition to the F-15, which essentially ended opposition to the LWF.[20][21][22]
ACF also raised the stakes for GD and Northrop because it brought in further competitors intent on securing the lucrative order that was touted at the time as “the arms deal of the century”. These were Dassault-Breguet’s Mirage F1M-53, the SEPECAT Jaguar, and a proposed derivative of the Saab Viggen styled the “Saab 37E Eurofighter” (which is not to be confused with the later and unrelated Eurofighter Typhoon). Northrop also offered another design, the P-530 Cobra, which looked very similar to its YF-17. The Jaguar and Cobra were dropped by the MFPG early on, leaving two European and the two U.S. LWF designs as candidates. On 11 September 1974, the U.S. Air Force confirmed firm plans to place an order for of the winning ACF design sufficient to equip five tactical fighter wings. On 13 January 1975, Secretary of the Air Force John L. McLucas announced that the YF-16 had been selected as the winner of the ACF competition.[23]
The chief reasons given by the Secretary for the decision were the YF-16’s lower operating costs; greater range; and maneuver performance that was “significantly better” than that of the YF-17, especially at near-supersonic and supersonic speeds. The flight test program revealed that the YF-16 had superior acceleration, climb rates, endurance, and (except around Mach 0.7) turn rates. Another advantage was the fact that the YF-16 – unlike the YF-17 – employed the Pratt & Whitney F100 turbofan engine, which was the same powerplant used by the F-15; such commonality would lower the unit costs of the engines for both programs.[22][24]
Shortly after selection of the YF-16, Secretary McLucas revealed that the USAF planned to order at least 650 and up to 1400 of the production version of the aircraft. The U.S. Air Force initially ordered 15 “Full-Scale Development” (FSD) aircraft (11 single-seat and 4 two-seat models) for its flight test program, but this would be reduced to 8 (6 F-16A and 2 F-16B). The Navy, however, announced on 2 May 1975, that it had decided not to buy the navalized F-16; instead, it would develop an aircraft derived from the YF-17, which would eventually become the McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 Hornet.[25]
Moving into production
Manufacture of the FSD F-16s got underway at General Dynamics’ Fort Worth, Texas plant in late 1975, with the first example, an F-16A, being rolled out on 20 October 1976, followed by its first flight on 8 December. The initial two-seat model achieved its first flight on 8 August 1977. The initial production-standard F-16A flew for the first time on 7 August 1978 and its delivery was accepted by the USAF on 6 January 1979. The F-16 was given its formal nickname of “Fighting Falcon” on 21 July 1980, and it entered USAF operational service with the 388th Tactical Fighter Wing at Hill AFB on 1 October 1980.[26]
A USAF F-16C of the Colorado Air National Guard (COANG) disengages from a refueling boom (fuel port is still open) over Canada. On 7 June 1975, the four European partners, now known as the European Participation Group, signed up for 348 aircraft at the Paris Air Show. This was split among the European Participation Air Forces (EPAF) as 116 for Belgium, 58 for Denmark, 102 for the Netherlands, and 72 for Norway. These would be produced on two European production lines, one in the Netherlands at Fokker’s Schiphol-Oost facility and the other at SABCA’s Gossellies plant in Belgium; production would be divided among them as 184 and 164 units, respectively. Norway’s Kongsberg Vaapenfabrikk and Denmark’s Terma A/S also manufactured parts and subassemblies for the EPAF aircraft. European co-production was officially launched on 1 July 1977 at the Fokker factory. Beginning in mid-November 1977, Fokker-produced components were shipped to Fort Worth for assembly of fuselages, which were in turn shipped back to Europe (initially to Gossellies starting in January 1978); final assembly of EPAF-bound aircraft began at the Belgian plant on 15 February 1978, with deliveries to the Belgian Air Force beginning in January 1979. The Dutch line started up in April 1978 and delivered its first aircraft to the Royal Netherlands Air Force in June 1979. In 1980 the first aircraft were delivered to the Royal Norwegian Air Force by SABCA and to the Royal Danish Air Force by Fokker.[22][27][28]
Since then, a further production line has been established at Ankara, Turkey, where Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) has produced 232 Block 30/40/50 F-16s under license for the Turkish Air Force during the late 1980s and 1990s, and has 30 Block 50 Advanced underway for delivery from 2010; TAI also built 46 Block 40s for Egypt in the mid-1990s. Korean Aerospace Industries opened another production line for the KF-16 program, producing 140 Block 52s from the mid-1990s to mid-2000s. If India selects the F-16IN for its Medium Multi-Role Combat Aircraft procurement, a sixth F-16 production line will be established in that nation to produce at least 108 fighters.[29]
Evolution
After selection, the YF-16 design was altered for the production F-16. The fuselage was lengthened 10.6 in (0.269 m), a larger nose radome was fitted to house the AN/APG-66 radar, wing area was increased from 280 sq ft (26 m2) to 300 sq ft (28 m2), the tailfin height was decreased slightly, the ventral fins were enlarged, two more stores stations were added, and a single side-hinged nosewheel door replaced the original double doors. These modifications increased the F-16's weight approximately 25% over that of the YF-16 prototypes.[30][31][32]
One needed change that would originally be discounted was the need for more pitch control to avoid deep stall conditions at high angles of attack. Model tests of the YF-16 conducted by the Langley Research Center revealed a potential problem, but no other laboratory was able to duplicate it. YF-16 flight tests were not sufficiently extensive to resolve the issue, but relevant flight testing on the FSD aircraft demonstrated that it was a real concern. As a result, the horizontal stabilizer areas were increased 25%; this so-called "big tail" was introduced on the Block 15 aircraft in 1981 and retrofitted later on earlier production aircraft. Besides significantly reducing (though not eliminating) the risk of deep stalls, the larger horizontal tails also improved stability and permitted faster takeoff rotation.[33][34][35]
In the 1980s, the Multinational Staged Improvement Program (MSIP) was conducted to evolve new capabilities for the F-16, mitigate risks during technology development, and ensure its currency against a changing threat environment. The program upgraded the F-16 in three stages. Altogether, the MSIP process permitted quicker introduction of new capabilities, at lower costs, and with reduced risks compared to traditional stand-alone system enhancement and modernization programs.[36] The F-16 has involved in other upgrade programs including service life extension programs in the 2000s.[37]
